The survey by the Taipei City Education Bureau found that the children of new residents have poor homework, mainly due to frequent lateness, interpersonal estrangement, and lack of homework (Taipei City Government Education Bureau, 2003), and their foreign parents are not well-adapted to living in a foreign country, which also causes their children to suffer at the school stage, children tend to fall into a melancholy complex due to various educational issues regarding academic performance and life adaptation.

Joanne’s reflection

After reading the thesis, I feel that when there are new immigrants around us, we should not exclude them. We should help them fit in at school, help them with their learning problems, and care about their situation at home.  I would recommend this thesis because it lets us know more about the new immigrants around us.

(2) A Review of Taiwan's New Inhabitant Vocational Training Policy: A Case of Southeast Asians

Abstract

This research aims to analysis whether Taiwan’s new inhabitant vocational training policy can solve the barriers to employment of Taiwan’s new inhabitant efficiently based on a literature review of the demands and barriers of Taiwan’s new inhabitant, the content of the vocational training policy and how the vocational training policy was built for.

The result of this research shows that Taiwan’s new inhabitant vocational training policy is not built for solving the problems that new inhabitant can’t be immersed in the local society, understanding the local culture, learning the local language, but also not contribute to solve the stereotypes and discrimination issues in Taiwan. In this article, we combine the research during last decade, it can imply students to understand how language barrier affect vocational training policy.

Maxine’s reflection

I think the policies implemented by the Taiwanese government are helpful to new immigrants. For friends who work in a foreign country, without the help of the government, they may have language conflicts in communication, and it may also cause a bad social atmosphere in Taiwan. I recommend this thesis because it lets us know more about the jobs of new immigrants.

(3) Chinese Learning and Life Adjustment of New Immigrants

Abstract

This thesis is talking about the fact that the new immigrant population is rising year by year, so new immigrants' demand for teaching materials about learning Chinese increases. Digital teaching materials can let learners learn new things without the limit of time or location. They can learn online when they are available, so the researcher hopes to set up a Chinese learning website and app, to let new immigrants learn Chinese online.

Ashley’s reflection

This thesis made me learn that for the new immigrants from non-Chinese Speaking areas, Chinese is the tool they need first of all, it is also one of the leading factors that influence their life. Through literacy education, they can understand Chinese and be more independent and confident. I think in order to let new immigrants fit in in Taiwan’ society, our government should make Chinese teaching materials more multicultural, and connect them with our daily life, so the new immigrants can learn Chinese easily.

(4) Research on Cultural Identity on Mother's Side in New Immigrants' Children: the Case of College Students

Abstract

In recent years, statistics and research reports on cross-border marriages have shown that multicultural families in Taiwan have been growing rapidly over the years, with a majority of women from Southeast Asia. As time passes, Taiwanese families with an immigrant background have reached a considerable number, as well as a gradual rise of the next generation being children of new immigrants, the cultural identity of children in cross-cultural families is an important issue. The Taiwanese government's promotion of the New Southbound Policy focuses on the children of new immigrant families. They hope that, in the future, they can create assets through the immigrant mother's language and cultural strengths. This research aims to explore the cultural identity experiences of children of new immigrants, taking university students as an example. This research examines how their cultural identity experiences have impacted them growing up and how they adapted to two different cultures. The author attempts to understand the cultural adaptation of children of new immigrants and their experiences on cultural identity, the difficulties they have encountered as well as what they consider their strengths are. It further explores the expectations of children of new immigrants for Taiwan’s multicultural policy and develops a multicultural-friendly policy

Monica’s reflection

I think the children of the new immigrants have many advantages, but at the same time they must also face many problems, just like the "cultural identity" mentioned in this thesis. The children of the new immigrants must also encounter many problems when they identify with their mother’s original culture.  I hope that those around me who know the children of the new immigrants can help them appropriately.

(5)A Study of the Development of the Community Supporting Network of the New Immigrants’ Children:A Case Study of Rainbow’s House in Sinhua Community in Miaoli Country.

This research is pointing at those new Inhabitants’ Children who were long-term participants in the activities of Xinhua community. We observed them in two different ways, one is to see how they developed their interpersonal relationship and how the community supported them to build their own interpersonal relationship. The other one is, to try to describe how the community make connection to this new Inhabitants’ Children, and make the best use of the resources of the community.

Amber’s reflection

After reading the thesis, I feel that the interaction between the new immigrants and Taiwanese is one of the issues that we must face. This is not only for the new immigrants. It can also make our society more harmonious and people in Taiwan could understand each other better.

(6)The Education Issues of the "New Inhabitants' Children"-A Viewpoint Based on Children's Learn Rights

Abstract

Children are the principal part of learning. They should be equal regardless of race, nationality or gender. For the children of the new inhabitants, it's especially important. It's the critical issue with respect to the best consideration on protecting these children's rights of learning for us the education. This article inquires the content of children's rights and then concludes the current development and needs in education related to these children. The purpose is to construct some effective strategies for improving the quality of education in respect of these children.

Our reflection

I think everyone should have the right to study. Even the children of new immigrants should not be treated differently because of their culture. I think this is a worthy topic to discuss.

(7) Summary

At the end, we analyze these theses and conclude three points. First, a few people still care about new immigrants. Second, most new immigrants still need our help. Third, we need to emphasize some problems on new immigrants, such as their right to learn, and their cultural identity for their mother country.

What we can do:

We think that the best thing we can do is to do something presented in the dissertation “A Study of the Development of the Community Supporting Network of the New Immigrants’Children:A Case Study of Rainbow’s House in Sinhua Community in Miaoli Country.”We tried to promote the culture of the new immigrants on campus. We invited the members from Dreamer Fly On Sky and Teacher Xiuwen from Meisai to give a speech at school in order to bridge the gap between our schoolmates and the related resources outside our school, and encourage our friends to join the activities about the new immigrants.
