Len “Transformation”

Analyzing immigrants’ cultural conflicts in Inside Out & Back Again with the Len “Transformation”

Through this book, we can fully understand how the new immigrants feel and what cultural conflicts they may have in the new environment. Although Taiwan is already a relatively friendly country in the world, some people may have prejudice against the new immigrants. I hope that through independent study, we can bridge the gap between ordinary students and new immigrant students to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange at school.

Communication

Gradually she understood why her classmates laughed at her. At first, she was very sad, after being comforted by her mom and Mrs. Washington, Ha became stronger.

Interpersonal relationships

Classmates at school

When Ha’s classmates mocked her with “Bodhisattva,” she counterattacked with “Jesus.” When her classmates tried to attack her, she counterattacked with kung fu her brother taught her, so her classmates became her brother’s fans of kung fu.

Mrs. Washington  She volunteered to be Ha’s English teacher, prepared lunch for her, and helped her solve problems. She was like Ha’s other mother.

Eating

When Mrs. Washington knew Ha was hiding in the restroom for lunch, she helped Ha prepare lunch, so Ha could eat with everyone.

Learning

English

Ha’s big brother Kuan taught Ha some grammar rules; Mrs. Washington asked Ha to memorize a new word every day and practice it in the dialogue ten times, so Ha learnt a lot more new words soon.

Math

When Ha was asked by her teacher, she successfully answered the difficult question, and it surprised her classmates a lot.

Conclusion

Mrs. Washington prepared lunch for Ha, patiently taught Ha English and carefully prepared dried papaya as Ha’s Christmas present. Ha still missed her hometown, but she gradually got used to living in the USA. The life in Alabama was just like dried papaya for Ha. Although it was not the same papaya as she ate in Vietnam, it was not bad at all.
